The tribute recognised the work the association has done for Basque shearing in recent years and every historic milestone it has reached.
The Sheep Shearers’ Association of Euskal Herria received public recognition of its work last Saturday, at an event held in Bedarona (Bizkaia). The tribute, promoted by local groups from Ea, Bedarona and Natxitua, Ea Town Council and the Bertoko Azoka group, recognised the work the association has done for Basque shearing in recent years and every historic milestone it has reached.
Throughout its journey, EAME has worked hard to professionalise the primary sector and to train new shearers. It also organises competitions and demonstrations and represents Euskal Herria at international championships. As a result, Basque sheep shearing has been gaining real recognition in recent years, both in Euskal Herria and internationally.
“We Basque shearers, small as we are, have shown that we are capable of great things both in Euskal Herria and around the world. The collective effort made around Basque sheep shearing keeps bearing fruit,” said the Basque shearers.
The association wishes to thank all the organising bodies and everyone who came along on Saturday for this popular recognition, and wants to stress that this tribute belongs to every person and organisation whose dedication has helped this project grow. “This recognition belongs to every person and organisation whose enthusiasm and commitment allow Basque sheep shearing to grow and to be valued. Thank you for believing in this project and for being our bellows!” they said.
The association wants to face the future with the same enthusiasm that has marked its journey so far: “We Basque shearers must keep bringing together the strength of people, organisations and institutions so that we can go on writing our history. The association’s doors are wide open to anyone. We must keep adding people to our project and strengthening our partnerships. Jalgi ardien mundura with us!” they added.
The Sheep Shearers’ Association of Euskal Herria encourages anyone interested in getting to know this trade and this sport to take part in its activities and to be part of this collective project.
